Fahrenheit 9/11 – 6/10

So we finally watched Fahrenheit 9/11 last night. So, rather than start a huge political flame war I’ll just let you know what I thought of the movie. I thought it was very well made propaganda. Michael Moore, as much as I can’t stand him, can make a good documentary, this just wasn’t one of them. I say that because this wasn’t a documentary at all, it was a witch hunt plain and simple.

Yes, there are some disturbing facts in it that are indisputable (like Bush sitting at the school for 7 minutes…). All the connections, however what Moore doesn’t tell you is that every President is connected like this (however the way in which we took the Bin Laden’s out of the country without questioning them is pretty scary). The problem is that Moore does exactly what he accuses the Bush White House of doing, he uses (in his case emotions) to influence people. I also think he uses fear as well, trying to scare us that Bush’s agenda is basically total world domination. He’s just as bad. He tugs on our heart strings about the war (now I agree that war is inherently bad). He also basically paints ALL middle-easterns that have interesting in America as evil. It’s just bad.

So if you hate Bush you’ll love this movie, you’ll just be wallowing in your own illusions. If you love Bush you’ll hate this movie, you’ll just be wallowing in your own illusions. If you don’t love or hate Bush, you’ll see it for what it is. A well done bad movie.

Spider-Man 2 – 6.5/10

Last night we watched Spider-Man 2. Disappointing. Very disappointing. After how great the first Spider-Man was, this one was a total let down.

Why didn’t I like it? The first hour and a half are total crap. Its long, slow, drawn out, and just plain boring. It should have been cut down to 30 minutes. Pretty much everything up to the subway car scene was crap, everything after was amazing. I really mean that, the last 30 minutes are great! Everything that is important in the movie happens there. I won’t spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it, but if you’re like me and don’t like the beginning just hold on, it does end great.

I’m not sure what Stan Lee (who wrote them) and Sam Raimi were thinking on this one, they just totally missed the boat. Tobey Maguire does once again do a great job as Peter Parker and Kirsten Dunst is very good as Mary Jane Parker. According to imdb.com they have both signed on for Spider-Man 3, due out in 2007. After this one I’m not really looking forward to that one… So I’m guessing I saw a different movie than everyone else, as I only know one other person that didn’t like it. If you loved the first one see it, but if you didn’t like the first don’t bother. Of course you could always just skip to the last 30 minutes!

We don’t listen anymore…

Last night I was talking to a great friend of mine, Derek Worth, about music (as we often do). He was telling me a story about Joshua Redman where he said that he doesn’t consider himself a musician, just someone who intensely loves to listen to music. That really made us realize that we, and when I say we I mean society (and even Derek and I to an extent), don’t listen to music anymore. Let me explain.

What I mean is that yes we all have iPods. We all have huge MP3 collections (and we all use Jinzora to stream them, right? MP3 players are selling like crazy. Our cars play them, our phones play them, there are even sunglasses that play them. So with all that music how could we not be listening? Because we don’t. We don’t sit down, close our eyes and spend time just listening to what the musicians are doing. Now part of that is that, in my opinion, most of the music that gets turned out today sucks. But, there is still amazing music being turned out. Why don’t we listen then? We’re too busy and we’ve lost the love of music. We have music on in the car. That doesn’t count, you’re driving (although it’s pretty close). We have music on when we exercise. We have music on at the office, but we’re working. We have music on in the background at home, but we’re doing everything other than listening.

So what can we do. Just shut up, sit down, turn off the lights/TV and put on some good music. If you don’t know what good music is email me and I’ll tell you! But most importantly, even if it’s bad music, listen. Listen listen listen.
